Organised by Lalit, some 1,000 workers of Leisure Garments and Summit Textiles submit their demands to the Prime Minister

In a press conference held on Tuesday 1st July, representatives of workers from the Leisure Garments and Summit Textiles, two free zone industries situated in Curepipe and the South respectively, presented a petition that were being sent to the Prime Minister.
Some 3,000 workers of Leisure Garments and 1,100 will loose their jobs as from the 31st of August 2003.
Lalit, through its Curepipe-South branch, launched this campaign to organise the free zone workers in the context of massive sackings which are the direct result of capitalist globalisation and the bankruptcy of the mauritian ruling class development strategy. We say no to the policy of the government and the bosses to place the whole burden of capitalist globalisation on workers.
The 1,000 workers who joined the campaign are demanding a special Redundancy Allowance of Rs 2,000 for a period of 2 years. They are also demanding that the government introduce a real Unemployment Benefit system and that government itself creates employment. Workers are requesting an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss their demands. Were present in the press conference for Lalit : Rajni Lallah, Devianand Narrain and Ashok Subron. Le Mauricien and L'Express, the two main daily papers, together with the MBC and Radio Plus delegated reporters to the press conference. Radio Plus, Radio One and the MBC broadcasted this information in their main news in the afternoon.
A delegation of representatives of workers together with Rajni Lallah from Lalit submitted the Petition to the Prime Minister at the new Prime Minister Office - which cost 210 million rupees for renovation.
