Let us look at who it is that Foreign Minister Ramful and Junior Finance Minister Damry so badly want to ally Mauritius so closely to. Look at who the Prime Minister Ramgoolam will be hosting in July as corporate America comes to Mauritius to meet the sugar and hotel bosses, and the live monkey-sellers, too, that are a major part of trade with the USA. Do we want to ally with this super-power, even as it degenerates this way? Even as Trump calls Mauritius that “stupid Island”?
As we write, President Trump, after the US and Israel have succeeded in killing over 6,000 civilians in Iran (let that sink in, six thousand people), says today that the ceasefire is holding. He says this despite the US having just sent missiles into Iran last night, claiming the target was military, when the Iranians, according to CNN, say “the air-strikes hit civilians”. In the same breath, this ally of Ramful and Damry, announces that “we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently” if they do not sign a deal. This is the language of the mafia, not of anyone dignified enough to be our country’s ally. Unless we are sinking to that level?
Trump’s genocidal statements do not provoke outrage from the Mauritian Government. It is silent on the USA’s genocidal actions and on its clearly expressed genocidal intentions. Ramgoolam and Ramful are lawyers, so they know “intention” is key to “genocide”. And Mauritius hosts a USA military base on our land? What are we doing?
Recently, for example, Trump announced, “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F‑‑‑in’ [Hormuz] Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!” He announces he will target civilian infrastructure, and that “you’ll” be living in hell, clearly addressed to the entire people of Iran. He also said, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” Later he replied to a question about whether he was serious or joking, on this last statement. He said, “I’m fine with it.” Much later, being advised by his legal department of his looming criminal jeopardy, he tried to cover up, saying he meant Iran’s military. No, he did not.
Other threats of war crimes include that Iran will be “blown off the face of the earth”. Is that a military target, too? This is who Damry and Ramful are wooing as an ever-closer ally? Not to mention Ramgoolam? This is who we want to have on our territory of Diego Garcia?
Cynical Timing? Pillage while Mass-Murdering?
And, we suffer new kinds of industrial killing now, in which the timing of the mass murder by President Trump in his bombing of Iran is likely to be linked to when the stock exchange opens or closes. His pals make millions as a side effect of his decisions about when to go on a killing spree. This corruption, too, our Ministers condone? Knowing an hour or two in advance what Trump will decide means his pals bet on the price of oil falling or rising sharply, and the stock market tanking or being boosted. Analysts know that this fraud, this theft, this insider trading happens. The figures prove it.
Sometimes the timing is to avoid the stock exchange completely crashing. So, Friday, when the stock exchange closes, becomes the day when Trump is more likely to be bellicose – sometimes in rhetoric, other times for blood-thirsty real. Monday, before the stock market opens with its stupid bells, is when he will announce on his Post on social media that a peace deal is imminent – usually in rhetoric, knowing this will lower oil prices, and boost the market.
All the while ....
Israel’s genocide against the people of Palestine, propelled by this colonial super-power led by lunatic mafia boss in Washington, is at the epicentre of world events today.
This genocide, a result of European colonization and a symbol of European military occupation over the past 500 years, now stands in the middle of a widening world-wide military crisis. The genocide is now the spectre of the death-throes of this same world-wide empire, as it cascades into free-fall: the USA is over-indebted, the dollar is paper-money alone, the American productive machinery is not being renewed, its political system is falling apart, and the State is in the most dangerous of moments: imperial over-reach. The USA kidnaps the President of Venezuela in the dark of night, stealing its oil. He attacks ships on the high seas, and on 1 May, Labour Day everywhere except in the USA, announced the US seizing Iran’s ships is “a very profitable business”. He said: “We took over the ship, took over the cargo, took over the oil. It’s a very profitable business. We are sort-of like pirates, only we are not playing games.” And Trump keeps threatening the people of Cuba by saying he will "taking Cuba almost immediately... Think I could do anything I want with it." He has just even more sanctions on Cuba.
The facade of Western civilization, the entire “civilizing mission” of European capitalism, is now exposed for all to see: the pillage, the cruelty, the impunity that has lasted too long, and the mass-scale of the murder over the past 100 years is high-lighted by what we see on our screens today.
After humanity seeing the mass scale of the industrial-level murder in the Nazi holocaust, and of the Nazi and Japanese imperial slaughter of civilians, especially in vast numbers in the USSR and China, respectively; after seeing the mass scale of this same industrial murder in the fire-bombing of Dresden and Tokyo by the Allies at the end of the War; and then the same mass scale of the killing, maiming, and contaminating with atom bombs that the USA dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; after all this, we now see the overt bombing of civilians in Iran. The USA, just to show that is what it is doing, sent its first missile to attack a children’s primary school. When the children who survived were taken to a hall in the grounds for safety, the USA sent its second missile to kill the rest. They murdered 168 children just to kick off the mass-murder in Iran. Analysts speculate that the USA’s aim was either to rely on the Iranians perhaps being so horrified by this random slaughter of children that they would at once surrender, or, perhaps, being so outraged that they might alternatively retaliate and perpetrate something similar against either Israel or a Gulf country that hosts a USA military base and then the USA could use this as propaganda against Iran. Who knows? But the USA knew what it was doing to those children, and did it in cold blood. They saw through the nozzle of their advanced missile that produces clear images what they were about to hit. And they hit it twice, even after seeing the little ones being shepherded to shelter in the hall after the first strike.
Meanwhile ...
Israel and the USA go on and on and on, bombing and shooting people in Gaza, while the blockade, the Medieval siege, goes on and on and on, tightening the Palestinians into less and less of their land. In the West Bank, the pattern is the same. As has been the pattern of Israel’s “Greater Israel” project in the whole of Palestine since 1948. And now, as we write, the “Greater Israel” project expands further to the Biblical land “from the Nile to the Euphrates”, thus including parts of Egypt, the whole of Jordan, the Lebanon and Syria, and parts of Iraq. It is truly terrifying that the USA and Europe, in the fall of their Empire, ally with this outrageous State of Israel.
What Israel and the USA have done to Gaza since October 2023, is to inflict the genocide, and yet not succeed in their aim, which was to “finish” Hamas. Hamas and the other armed groups of resistance against colonial occupation have all survived. Only civilians have been targeted and killed. That is all the Israeli army can do: aim at and kill and maim civilians. All that Israel with its USA armaments, political cover, and intelligence information, did was to kill whole families, wipe out the entire civilian infrastructure of hospitals, schools, universities, creches, farms, factories, workshops, small businesses, and even the water-works and sewerage works, all the while herding Palestinians into ever-less of their own land, corralling them like animals. And calling them “animals”, too. Can Mauritian Ministers really want to ally with a USA that drives Israel’s genocide?
Now, while all eyes are on the USA and Israel’s war of aggression against Iran which it is important to note is the ONLY state that, in fact, supports Palestine, at this moment when peoples’ eyes are averted, Trump and Netanyahu, the latter already “WANTED” for war crimes and crimes against humanity, continue their genocide in Palestine. Ramful and Ramgoolam and Damry want to ally with this USA, that has lashed itself to this genocidal state of Israel?
Israel, while eyes are averted, moves into Southern Lebanon, where its military, exempt from all moral inhibitions and all pressure from its allies, flattens whole villages. Hezbollah successfully blows up many of their tanks, one or two every day, as Israel tries to send its armed forces to occupy the ruins of the destroyed villages in the beautiful scenery of that gentle, rural part of Lebanon. This, too, Ramgoolam, Ramful and Damry want to ally with?
Meanwhile, Israel and the USA still each occupy parts of Syria, now under the rule of the former Al Queda boss, Ahmed al-Sharaa. And it goes unnoticed that on 1st May, a whistle-blower won his case for defamation against the UN chemical watchdog, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which has had to pay him damages. The whistle-blower was the person who revealed that the Douma chemical attack that was blamed on Al-Assad was a false-flag operation conducted by pro-US terror groups. The UN chemical watchdog suppressed evidence by its own investigators to falsely claim the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad carried out a chemical attack in 2018. This was one of the main “reasons” that the USA, in Trump’s first term, gave for bombing Syria from then on as the final part of “Operation Timber Sycamore” to overthrow the al-Assad Government.
This, too, the Mauritian Government does not see? Who are the terrorists here? Who are the pirates in the waters of Venezuela and in the Straits of Hormuz?
When US President Donald Trump announces that an agreement with Iran is nigh, then we know it is a moment when he may well give orders for an attack on Iran. Although, this same Donald Trump lives in trepidation of the much smaller Iranian armed forces because he has discovered that the Iranians use rational military tactics in their defense, as part of a broader strategic goal, and that these defenses have resulted in the US military having lost some 39 airplanes in the 39-day “Epic Fury” that the USA, itself launched. It lost 39 airplanes, and 13 of its military bases hosted by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE (which includes Dubai and Abu Dhabi) have been either totally disabled, or badly damaged. In military language, Iran has “blinded” the USA and Israel by attacking their radar and other forward-warning devices. Even Saudi Arabia and Kuwait suspended USA abilities to use its bases and airspace to attack Iran. Trump immediately cancelled Project Freedom. And it is reported that since then restrictions have been lifted.
And the USA has a military base on our land. We, the Republic of Mauritius, are under military occupation. And our leaders fail to notice? Even when Trump is on this rampage with Netanyahu?
The USA together with Israel, the last, most grotesque colonial remnant, now increasingly draw in Mauritius, through our hosting of another grotesque colonial remnant, the UK-USA’s military occupation of Diego Garcia, on the so-called 'British Indian Ocean Territory'.
Everything around Israel goes unstable in wider and wider circles that get drawn into the chaos. This genocide began in earnest in the 1947-8 establishment of the settler colonial State of Israel. The beginnings of the Israeli-perpetrated genocide was given a pass, illogically, at the very time that the Nazi German genocide against the Jewish peoples of Europe was being exposed. The genocide goes on until today.
We do not want the Government to get us on the wrong side of history. This is why we in LALIT together with now 27 other organizations, 28 in all, stand against the Israeli and US genocide against the Palestinian people and the war of aggression against Iran, and why stand in favour of closing down the US military base on our land, in particular on Diego Garcia, and also why, in the context of the looming budget we call on Government to ensure food and energy security for Mauritius by forcing the sugar oligarch land-owners to grow and process food crops, and to force the hotel bosses to invest in a shipping fleet, while the government ensures energy sovereignty by moving away from fossil fuels.
