Matt Meyer visiting from New York Speaks at LALIT Public Meeting

11.08.2025

LALIT held an open meeting for peace activist visiting from Brooklyn in New York City, Matt Meyer. He shared his views on peace activism and on organizing against militarism in this moment in history. LALIT knows Matt from when one of our leading members Alain Ah Vee met him at two different past assemblies of the War Resisters’ International that LALIT attended, one in Ahmedabad, the other in Cape Town. So we share a constant struggle against war, and to strengthen the international movement to close down all foreign military bases like the USA-UK one on Diego Garcia.

The talk was held Wednesday last week 6 August in Rose-Hill at the CTSPP Hall on the first floor. Alain Ah Vee presided for LALIT, and interpretation into Kreol was provided by Gary, Kisna and Rajni. As well as LALIT members and guests, there were CTSPP members, and delegates from three unions and four associations present for the talk. There were a series of lively questions and comments at the end.

Matt Meyer is Secretary-General of the International Peace Research Association, Coordinator of War Resisters International Africa Support Network, and on the Coordinating Committee of a coalition called ‘Spirit of Mandela’. He is active in Pan African networking.

The title of his talk was “The Building of Common Fronts: Solidarity, Palestine, Militarism, and Worker's Rights - From New York City to Port Louis and Beyond."

There is a copy of his notes to which he spoke loaded on to the “Documents” Section of LALIT’s website: lalitmauritius.org     (We have also uploaded a copy in our Documents Section of the leaflet that LALIT’s Curepipe-South regional distributed at the Omnicane Gates and that is referred to in the Matt Meyer speech.)

There have been press reports on the MBC 7:30 pm News on Friday 8 August and in Mazavarou 7 August. Two newspapers have also done interviews with Matt.

While he was here, Matt also held a meeting with LALIT Central Committee members on Thursday 7 August.
