Yesterday Alain Ah Vee and Rajni Lallah, in LALIT’s name, sent an Open Letter to Prime Minister Ramgoolam putting his responsibility, as a human being, as a trained doctor, as a trained lawyer, as finance minister and most-of-all as Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, to act so as to at once halt the slaughter of Palestinians, and at once to end the intentional starving to death of civilians in Gaza, and to take a stand against the State of Israel and its culpable allies.
Here is a copy of the letter:
Hon. Navin Ramgoolam,
Prime Minister
Registry Level 6, West Wing,
New Government Centre,
Port Louis.
23 July 2025
Dear Prime Minister,
You are a trained medical doctor so, when you look at the civilians, when you look at the children, in Palestine, being bombed in their houses from Israeli airplanes and drones above, shelled by Israeli tanks in their neighbourhoods, and sniped at by individual Israeli soldiers, you know what it means in terms of the suffering. You know what it feels like to be a doctor at one of those intentionally bombed hospitals. Now, as Israel imposes starvation on the children, the injured, the homeless and the aged, as well as every other civilian – intentional, previously planned and even previously announced since October 2023 starvation – you, as a trained medical practitioner know in your very bones what this starvation-to-death means.
You, Dr. Ramgoolam, are also a trained lawyer so, when you read the phrase “Convention on the Prevention ... of Genocide”, you know that no-one on earth needs to wait, even legally speaking, for judges to decide whether the term “genocide” is appropriate, but instead every state has a legally binding duty to name it as such itself and therefore be able to respect the Treaty for its “prevention”. You are not an uninformed layman on this issue of “prevention” of genocide.
You, Dr. Ramgoolam, studied at the London School of Economics and you are right now Minister of Finance so, when you see who supplies Israel with armaments, bombs and shells, the airplanes and drones, the so-called “intelligence”, you know all this costs money and it implicates the supplier, and you know that most of those supplies come from the USA and European countries. Being an economist, you will have read Ms. Francesca Albanese’s recent UN Report “From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide” exposing the profits being made on the slaughter of the children of Gaza.
You, Dr. Ramgoolam are not only in these positions of privileged understanding, but you are right now the Prime Minister of Mauritius. You can help put a stop to this torture and this massacre of the people of Palestine.
You can right now fix an urgent Cabinet Meeting, and take two decisions:
First, to inscribe the Republic of Mauritius into the list of countries supporting South Africa at the ICJ against Israel’s genocide; this will help compensate for your Government’s shocking withdrawal from “oral submissions” before the other ICJ case against Israel for keeping the UN and others from distributing food and supplies in Gaza. The previous Government, to its credit, sent a team of top legal scholars to give oral submissions in the ICJ case which has already declared the Israeli occupation of Palestine illegal, called for its end, for the right of return, and for reparations.
Second, to draw up an immediate list of actions you will take so as to isolate the State of Israel. This should include the immediate suspension of all diplomatic ties with Israel and the imposition of total economic and other sanctions on Israel. Any multi-national companies linked with profiteering from crimes committed against the people of Palestine should be boycotted. Restriction must be placed on visas to exclude all Israelis in any way implicated in military service. You need to call for the immediate suspension from the UN of the State of Israel. And, you also need to suspend any agreement with the UK over Chagos, including Diego Garcia, because of the risk of the USA implicating our country in genocide, by using our land to inflict genocide on the Palestinians, in particular in Gaza.
You need to act so that the killing of Palestinians, including by starving children to death, is not on your hands, and therefore, on ours.
Yours sincerely,
Rajni Lallah, Alain Ah Vee
