New Government to Take Stand in Citizenship Case

Tomorrow, Friday 23 May, the new “Changement” Government is expected to give its stand on the Supreme Court case on citizenship. If not, the case will finally go ahead in Court Room number 3. Readers of LALIT’s site will remember that the Jugnauth Government passed a law in 2022 that gave the Prime Minister total power to unilaterally, without giving any reason, without any right of appeal, revoke the citizenship of “any citizen” who had become a citizen after marriage to a Mauritian. LALIT member Lindsey Collen challenged the Jugnauth law in the Supreme Court from 2022, and she and supporters have been in the Supreme Court for different hearings at least 14 times over the past nearly three years. 

When he was in the Opposition, the now Prime Minister, promised to revoke this law. Lindsey Collen, you will recall, wrote to the new Attorney General, when he took office, to ask him whether the State would now, logically, change its stand.

So, the lawyer representing the State, barrister Yvan Jean-Louis is expected to take a stand tomorrow. 

If not, the case will finally be heard by the two judges. 

So, this is the key moment.
