We are publishing an insight response from Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine following common declaration in Solidarity with Palestinian teachers initiated by Education Commission of LALIT. The common declaration endorsed by 5 unions of teachers in Mauritius and Rodrigues was published on our website lalitmauritius and on our fb page on 3rd August 2024. The common declaration was circulated to International trade unions and organisations.
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Many thanks for your solidarity with Palestinian teachers. It is deeply appreciated. We feel less alone in facing what no one should ever face in their lifetimes.
Human and material losses have been tremendous in the education sector, children and students in Gaza have been robbed of an entire school year, but education of girls and boys has always been a priority and a great pride for us. Although many of the classrooms have been destroyed, alongside higher education institutions, and schools have been hosting displaced families for months, teachers are ready to resume their duty to educate our children and youth as soon as conditions allow. Some university students have been able to pursue their studies online with Palestinian universities in the West Bank. Everywhere in Gaza, there are initiatives to help children reconnect with learning, as we did during the summer camp we conducted recently in central Gaza.
We will circulate your declaration to our partner unions in the education sector, and urge you to pursue your solidarity actions.
Through workers’ solidarity, we can build a better world, where we are all equal in rights and we can all live in freedom and dignity.
With our comradely greetings,
Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine
