There will be a very interesting session at the Supreme Court next Friday.
Finally, Lindsey Collen’s Constitutional Case is now FIXED for arguments FRIDAY 28 JULY.
The arguments will be on the question as to whether she has “locus standi” or the right to put the case at all. The issues involved are absolutely fascinating because they concern everyone in Mauritius, and almost all our rights, and just to follow this case is a good intro to the extent human rights are or are not protected by the Constitution, itself.
Having crawled along for nearly a year, the case will now suddenly speed up. Here are the details of place and time:
SUPREME COURT Number 3, on the 9th Floor on Friday 28th July at 10:30.am. (A lot of numbers in that last sentence, so here is one more, for fun: it is the 10th time we will be mobilizing people, so as to also nurture an understanding of the case, each time a merry band of 15 to 35 people from literally all walks of life and even all political currents have so far been present.)
Our case is the only case fixed that day before the judges. Yes, the case will be heard by not one, but two Supreme Court Judges: Judges Chan Kan Cheong and Gunesh-Balaghee. The fact that they have no other cases on the List means we can expect Lindsey’s case to start fairly promptly. She will be represented by two barristers, Me. Antoine Domingue SC and Jean-Claude Bibi, and Attorney Ayesha Jeewa, all three working pro bono.
