feu Ram Seegobin: The need for Alternative Economic Politics and How to go about it byRam Seegobin, leading LALIT member passed away on the 28th of January. LALIT militants' minds are full of memories of him. One memory of Comrade Ram useful for today, explains the need for alternative economic politics to create jobs on a massive scale, for food security, to get foreign currency to import what cannot be produced in Mauritius. He also explained in a very practical way how it can be done.
In 2005, the WTO ruled the EU could no longer export subsidised sugar it bought from post-colonial states like Mauritius. This led to decrease of guaranteed prices to ACP countries for sugar until over the years, the EU sugar quota and guaranteed price withered away.
The EU compensation money was used to subsidise sugar estates for them to centralise, mechanise, and develop cane-based energy production for half the year in times of cane harvest.
Since then, sugar estates apart from energy production have been converting fertile agricultural lands to luxury real estate villas for billionaires and selling them off for vast profits, and delocalising to other African States to produce sugar there.
In 2008, there was a serious food crisis when the price of rice, the staple food in Mauritius, shot up when it could be found. The price of food increased to unknown levels during the COVID period when cargo to Mauritius became scarce. Food prices continued to soar with the war in Ukraine. Mauritius imports 80% of its food.
