The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan by USA on 6 and 9 August 1945
The United States dropped two atomic bombs on two cities in Japan, destroying Hiroshima on 6th August and Nagasaki on 9th August, 1945. These attacks caused over 210,000 deaths and thousands more suffered severe injuries by the end of 1945. To commemorate these tragic events, to reaffirm their commitment to peace and opposition to war and nuclear weapons, every year an executive Committee comprising of Students' Associations, Japan Revolutionary Communist League (JRCL) and Antiwar Youth Committee organize assemblies held simultaneously in seven cities in Japan. This year, as in previous years, LALIT, trade unions and anti-imperialist political organisations have been invited to send a message of solidarity on the occasion of these commemorations.

Revolutionary Greetings from LALIT (Struggle) in Mauritius
Comrades,
We, once again, stand in solidarity with all the workers, students and anti-war activists gathered in Tokyo and six other cities for your International Antiwar Assemblies.
These Assemblies are taking place in the middle of massive global instability accentuated by US-Israel illegal war of aggression against Iran. This war is already becoming a widened regional war and at the time this message is being written, it is almost impossible to predict in what catastrophic direction we are heading (26 July 2026), whether in terms of killing and destruction, or in terms of the world economy heading for a depression with serious problems for energy and food prices that will be felt by the working people.
Meanwhile, the desperate Trump-Netanyahu alliance, as its tactics fail in a scenario for which they seem to have no strategy, is acting against all international laws and conventions, and even against human decency itself. On the very first day, they targeted and bombed a girls’ elementary school in Minab in Iran killing 168 school children, assassinated the Head of State who is also a religious leader as well as his “etat major”, killed top civilian scientists, and with the bombing of Iranian cities, also murdered and injured thousands of ordinary citizens. The entire region is being turned into a battlefield by the illegal war imposed by US imperialist and its domineering stooge, Israel.
US-Israel continues the killing of thousands of defenceless Iranians, bombarding civilian infrastructure and imposing a blockade on Iranian trade routes, in response to Iran’s closing of the Straits of Hormuz. Combined with this, after Saudi Arabia bombed the airport in Yemen, the Houthis have closed the Red Sea to vessels going to and from the Arabian ports on the Eastern side of the country. This is how the disruption in the trade routes and energy supplies will contribute to rising fuel prices, higher food costs that are, in turn, impacting the purchasing power of the working people at global level.
Comrades,
The genocidal Israel regime continues to massacre Palestinian and Lebanese people. Netanyahu is a war criminal with an arrest warant on his head issued by International Criminal Court (ICC). Even that, he continues his genocidal attack against the people of Gaza and in the Occupied Territories with all impunity.
LALIT’s campaign includes forcing our respective Governments to join the ICJ case entered by South Africa against the Israeli state for committing genocide against the Palestinian people. The Israeli state has to be made accountable for crimes committed against humanity, and be brought immediately to end its illegal occupation of Palestine, the Lebanon and Syria.
At national level our campaign is to boycott Israel interests, suspend diplomatic ties, as well as calling the Government to ensure visa restrictions on Israeli visitors, in particular to bar anyone associated in any way with the Israeli military.
Comrades,
The Russia-Ukraine war also continues to escalate after four years of bombing, causing injuries and death among civilians in Ukraine and Russia, and with NATO continuing to increase its military and other aid to the corrupt regime in Kiev. After years of destruction, civilians in both Ukraine and Russia continue to suffer while the military-industrial complex profits, particularly in the USA and Europe, grow and the prospects of an early peace decrease.
We believe that only the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, coupled with a simultaneous commitment from NATO countries to stop providing munitions that escalate the war, is necessary. Western imperialism, meanwhile, has almost destroyed Ukraine, while using it as a battering ram against Russia. Russia-phobia is being spread like wild-fire by the Governments and elites in the West. Working people in the USA and NATO countries such as Italy are organising strike actions and protests against their Governments’ decisions to increase military budgets while cutting social expenses.
Comrades,
The Republic of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean is not exempt from the imperialist war in the Middle East, or West Asia, to be more precise. The illegal occupation by the UK-USA alliance of part of Mauritius called the Chagos Archipelago persists, thus prolonging their military occupation of Mauritius for their Diego Garcia military base, which is being used as a fall-back as the USA-Israel alliance’s bases hosted by proxies in the Gulf States. Our Government, by its agreement to the military base is thus placing Mauritius in the position of a belligerent State and, worse still, on the side of those perpetrating a war of aggression. Yes, the Diego Garcia base is being used with the tacit consent of the Mauritian Government, which made a shameful deal with UK for renting the military base for 100 years or more in return of an annual payment of 10 billions Rupees. LALIT and workers organisations consider the Rs 10 billion to be “blood money”.
However, the 'deal' is still pending after president Trump labelled it as an "act of great stupidity" on the part of Starmer, former UK Prime Minister. The Mauritian Government has been humiliated but is nevertheless still acting as a 'doormat' to the USA and UK, and bowing down to make deals with Trump administration on commercial and even security issues.UK and USA are acting as rogue nations by not abiding with international law, more so because in 2019, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and UN General Assembly confirmed UK-USA occupation of Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia, to be illegal and also confirmed Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelagos.
LALIT and 27 workers’ organisations and peoples’ associations in Mauritius are unify and campaigning around a program for the closure of the Diego Garcia military base, to amend the Constitution to abolish foreign military bases from our country and demand the full return of the Chagos Islands, as well as standing against Israeli genocide, and denouncing the war of aggression being perpetrated by the USA-Israel against Iran.
Comrades, our struggle in Mauritius against US Diego Garcia Military bases is in line with your struggle in Japan against the US military bases in Okinawa. Together we have to consolidate internationalism as essential to oppose imperialist wars and build socialism. It is important that the class struggle and the anti-imperialist struggle are well-articulated together. Here, many working class organizations are only now beginning to see the link between the anti-imperialist struggle and the struggle against the dismantling of old-age pensions, for which a massive demonstration was held on 11 July,
As always, we stand in solidarity with your struggle for a new world where there are Peace, Land and Bread for the people prevail.
Long live Working Class Struggle, until victory!
Long live internationalism!
Long Live the struggle for socialism!
LALIT
