The Communiqué that Prime Minister Ramgoolam announced in the National Assembly, before instructing the Foreign Affairs Ministry to issue it, pretends that there is equivalence between Israel and the USA, on one side, and Iran, on the other. There is, according to the Government alliance, merely some vague “belligerence” floating around. In reality, there is blatant Israeli-USA aggression. This, the Mauritian Government, in its communiqué, quietly covers up. In reality the attacks by Israel, and then by the USA, on Iran are totally illegal. They are without a casus belli, or cause of war. So, Israel and the USA are guilty of the crime of all war crimes, unjustified war. Not to mention the war crimes of perfidy and wanton war-mongering, not to mention Israel, itself, having an illegal secret nuclear bomb arsenal, while Iran has, by contrast, according to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, “an inalienable right” to enrich uranium up to, but below, weapons grade uranium.
The Ramgoolam Government has issued a shameful communiqué. It is a sign of Mauritius having taken up the role of “vassal” to the USA.
And as for the hypocrisy of pretending Mauritius is part of the “peace-loving world” when it has just signed up to being a part of the USA’ war machine by renting out Diego Garcia for generations to come in exchange for blood money.
This makes it so much worse that the new Government has not once denounced the genocide Israel is inflicting on the Palestinians. Worse still, it simply jacked out of the appointment at the UN’s International Court of Justice for “oral submissions” on the case about Israel’s blocking of food and medicine into Gaza.
We call for the Ramgoolam Government to, at once, take a stand against Israel’s aggression in Iran, the USA’s aggression in Iran, and against the genocide that the two belligerents are, at the same time, inflicting upon the defenseless people of Palestine, whom they colonize relentlessly. The sell-out in the face of genocide is worse than shameful. It is cowardly, cruel and inhuman.
We expect more from a Government. But, as with the pension sell-out, we see more sell-outs, instead of principled stands.
The working people of the country will need to stand up and act against both genocide and war, the occupation of Chagos, and in defense of social gains made by the working class over the past century of struggle against both colonialism and capitalism.
