The Grande Riviere Film Club (Fim-kLib) last Friday watched the Turkish film, Bal, meaning “Honey”. It is a beautiful film, made in 2010, within the slow pace of rural reality in the forests of Anatolia, in particular within the pace of hunting and gathering, a film built around the story of a 6-year-old boy learning the skills of honey-harvesting from his father. The child is unhappy in the confines of school, and has difficulty speaking loudly, let alone reading, and yet is in wonderment in the forest, able to accomplish the most difficult of tasks. The film is particular, in that with the passage of time as the film proceeds, we learn that our first observations about his parents, a sullen-seeming father, and a resentful seeming mother, are erroneous, as we plunge into the full details of the society the little boy lives in. We live in the houses of the people, dance with them, see their every hand-made tool, bit of upholstery, toy, utensil, and learn to love the culture and feel close to the people living within its confines. And we learn all this while living the story of the little boy’s life. The film, by Semih Kaplanoglu, is also characterised by the most unusual use of sound: instead of music, there is the deft use of all the sounds of the forest: the insects and the birds make up the background sound.
The next film will be a Mike Leigh released in 2002, All or Nothing.
